Path of Exile 2: A Closer Look at the Upcoming Early Access Launch
With the early access launch of Path of Exile 2 just around the corner, fans of the action RPG genre are eagerly anticipating the release set for December 6. Developer Grinding Gear Games has revealed more details about what players can expect from this highly anticipated sequel to a popular PC game, which was first announced five years ago.
Path of Exile 2, initially intended as a secondary campaign sharing the endgame with the original 2013 release, has evolved into a standalone sequel. The game will operate alongside its predecessor, featuring its own set of seasonal leagues and varying gameplay mechanics.
Jonathan Rogers, the game’s director, emphasized the game’s transformation, noting its inspiration from titles like Elden Ring, with features such as active blocking and a revamped skill system. The upcoming version promises a fresh take on the familiar gameplay, encouraging players to utilize varied actions rather than focusing on solitary abilities.
Upon its early access release, six out of the planned twelve classes will be available: Warrior, Monk, Mercenary, Sorceress, Witch, and Ranger. Each class will feature two out of the three anticipated Ascendancies. Rogers noted the disappointment in the absence of the anticipated shapeshifting Druid class but assured players it would be introduced in a future phase.
A significant component of Path of Exile 2 is its shared passive skill tree, a hallmark of the series known for its complexity. Rogers assures that the tree, while expansive, is designed to be accessible and rewarding, offering a more sophisticated version than its predecessor.
The early access will present the game’s first three acts, estimated to require around 25 hours to complete on the initial playthrough. Players are expected to get to level 45, at which point they will replay these acts on a ‘cruel’ difficulty level to advance to level 65, until more content is released.
Rogers highlighted the importance of a robust endgame for Path of Exile 2, a feature they believe is crucial in retaining and satisfying players. Seven distinct systems are planned for the early access release, centered around a dynamically generated Atlas map.
Popular league mechanics like Breach, Ritual, Delirium, and Expedition will have sequels appearing in Path of Exile 2. Each mechanic’s successful completion will yield rewards and advance players through its respective challenges.
The launch will also feature the Trial of the Sekhemas and the Trialmaster’s Challenge as part of the endgame activities, offering unique challenges and rewards.
The development team plans to double the game’s content post-early access, adding more classes, story acts, enemies, and bosses. The early access period will require players to purchase a $30 supporter key unless they have spent $500 or more over the past decade on the original Path of Exile.
Path of Exile 2 aims to carve its niche as a leading ARPG for enthusiasts and newcomers alike, offering a mix of innovative gameplay and classic features reminiscent of its predecessor.
