Pegula Wins WTA 1000 Title in Toronto
In an exciting match on Monday, Jessica Pegula claimed the WTA 1000 title in Toronto, defending her championship title from last year.
Pegula, ranked sixth in the world, triumphed over fellow American Amanda Anisimova with scores of 6-3, 2-6, and 6-1.
The 30-year-old player from Buffalo started the match strong, breaking Anisimova’s serve right away, which put the pressure on the younger player.
Anisimova, just 22 years old, tried to fight back by unleashing her powerful shots, but she struggled with her consistency, racking up 28 errors in the first set alone.
Pegula managed to win the first set, losing only one point on her own serve. However, she faced a stronger Anisimova in the second set, who made fewer mistakes and came back to win it 6-2.
In the decisive third set, Pegula quickly regained control, winning 17 of the first 20 points and didn’t let Anisimova find her rhythm again.
This victory marks Pegula’s third WTA 1000 title and adds to her impressive record of 17-2 in this tournament over her career.
