Philadelphia 76ers Hold Team Meeting Amid Struggles
In light of a disappointing start to the NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers held a crucial team meeting after suffering a fourth consecutive loss, sources informed ESPN. The Sixers currently stand at 2-11, placing them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. This meeting, instigated by veteran guard, aimed at addressing the urgent need for improvement within the team’s dynamics.
According to sources present at the meeting, guard Tyrese Maxey brought up the issue of accountability, challenging Joel Embiid—the league’s 2022-23 MVP—about his habitual tardiness. «Tyrese loves Big Fella, but this is the elephant in the room,» a source involved in the meeting stated, as reported by ESPN. Embiid, who was frequently absent on game day due to an illness, acknowledged the criticisms but expressed confusion over the team’s game plan.
Players urged 76ers head coach Nick Nurse for more rigorous coaching while coaches highlighted the importance of practice discipline. Maxey himself has been sidelined since November 7 with a right hamstring injury, but is expected to return to action soon. He reportedly stressed the importance of «the little things» that contribute to winning games, emphasizing a need to implement detailed preparation and execute strategies effectively.
Emphasizing a lack of cohesion, Nurse noted, «There’s a lot of good dudes in there [and] a lot of good, hardworking coaches that are in this meeting. Everybody wants the team to succeed, and we’re not.» He acknowledged both internal and external factors impacting the team’s performance but remains hopeful that with improved health and teamwork, a turnaround is possible.
During the offseason, Philadelphia made significant roster changes after their early playoff exit. The team acquired George, a nine-time All-Star, on a four-year contract worth $212 million to better support Embiid and Maxey. Despite high expectations, the Sixers’ current performance has fallen short. ESPN’s Basketball Power Index ranked them third in the preseason, and their win total was projected at 51.5 games.
With another opportunity on the horizon, the meeting’s impact could become clearer during the Sixers’ upcoming match against the Memphis Grizzlies. As of now, Maxey has been upgraded to questionable for this game, and Coach Nurse indicated that if he plays, his minutes could be limited. The team is in desperate need of stability, particularly in the ball-handling department, with multiple players unavailable due to injuries.
