Philadelphia Union Signs 14-Year-Old Cavan Sullivan in MLS Record Deal
Philadelphia Union has made a groundbreaking move by signing 14-year-old midfielder Cavan Sullivan through 2028, setting a record deal in Major League Soccer history.
Cavan Sullivan, a prodigious talent who rose through the ranks of the Union Academy, has become the youngest player ever to join the first team roster of the Philadelphia Union.
Ernst Tanner, the Sporting Director of Philadelphia Union, expressed utmost confidence in Sullivan’s abilities, citing his exceptional skill, vision, and soccer IQ that surpass his age.
In his statement, Sullivan expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for his hometown team, fulfilling a lifelong dream that includes playing alongside his brother.
Sullivan’s journey began in 2020 when he joined the Union Academy, progressing swiftly through the Pro Player Pathway and making a mark with the U15 MLS NEXT team, U17 MLS NEXT team, and Philadelphia Union II MLS NEXT Pro team.
His standout performances in prestigious tournaments like the Generation Adidas Cup and the Concacaf Boy’s Under-15 Championship have earned him accolades, including being named to the Best XI in the former.
The youngest player on the team, Sullivan led the US to victory in the 2023 Concacaf Boy’s Under-15 Championship, cementing his status as a rising star in American soccer.
If Sullivan debuts for the Philadelphia Union on or before July 29, 2024, he will break records as the youngest player to make his debut in major North American professional sports leagues and the top five European soccer leagues.
This signing marks a milestone for both Philadelphia Union and Cavan Sullivan, promising an exciting future at Subaru Park for the young midfielder.
