Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ranger Suarez left Saturday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals prematurely after being struck by a line drive on his left hand. The incident occurred in the second inning when Cardinals left fielder Alec Burleson hit a scorching 106.1 mph liner towards Suarez.

Suarez, known for his steady demeanor, managed to make the play by fielding the ball and tossing it to first base before showing signs of discomfort. He was immediately attended to by assistant athletic trainer Joe Rauch and eventually left the game, receiving an initial diagnosis of a left hand contusion.

The Phillies, who have been dominating with the best record in baseball, had gotten off to a strong start in the game with a 3-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of key hits from Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos against Cardinals ace Sonny Gray.

The sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park witnessed Suarez’s resilience as he struck out two batters over two hitless innings before departing. His stellar performance had contributed to his league-best 1.70 ERA and an impressive 9-1 record this season.

The loss of Suarez, who was slated to pitch the opener in London next Saturday as part of the Phillies’ upcoming schedule, presents a significant setback for the team as they navigate a crucial stretch of games ahead.
