Pittsburgh Steelers Head into Game Against Cleveland Browns with Key Player Inactive
On a short week for NFL teams, maintaining player health is crucial. The Pittsburgh Steelers, heading into their game against the Cleveland Browns, have largely managed to stay healthy, with the notable exception of linebacker Alex Highsmith. Highsmith is inactive for the second consecutive game following an ankle injury sustained against the Washington Commanders.
In his absence, linebackers Preston Smith and Nick Herbig will be expected to step up once again. Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin highlighted the division of responsibilities between the two during the previous week’s game, attributing it to the limited number of defensive snaps available due to the team’s effective ball possession strategy. «We were getting off the field. We were possessing the ball some on offense,» Tomlin explained. «There weren’t as many defensive snaps to go around.»
Tomlin praised Herbig, noting his ability to fulfill his defensive role without experiencing a decline in performance. «He’s a big-time player,» Tomlin commented. «He’s a young guy, but even in a small sample size, I think we all recognize his play-making capabilities.» He added that Herbig is benefiting from training alongside seasoned players such as T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, which is contributing to his development.
Meanwhile, Browns’ Head Coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledged the challenge posed by facing Preston Smith, who has been a formidable addition to the Steelers’ defense. «He’s playing on both sides,» said Stefanski. «Very long player. Strong, good against the run. Plays with effort. He can really be a factor in the run or the pass.»
In addition to Highsmith, the Steelers have declared several other players inactive, including receiver Scotty Miller, running back Jonathan Ward, and guard Max Scharping. Kyle Allen will serve as the third quarterback.
For the Browns, critical injuries have also led to inactives, including offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. due to a knee issue and tight end Geoff Swaim following a concussion. Quarterback Bailey Zappe will fill the role of the emergency third quarterback.
