Pochettino Set to Coach USMNT
In exciting news for soccer fans, Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to become the next head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). While an official announcement hasn’t been made yet by U.S. Soccer, sources close to the situation have hinted that an agreement is in the works.
Pochettino, 52, was previously the manager of Chelsea before leaving by mutual consent last May. During his time there, he helped the team qualify for European competition this season with a record of 26 wins, 11 draws, and 14 losses.
Famous for his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino led the team to their first UEFA Champions League Final in 2019, where they sadly lost to Liverpool. He also coached Paris Saint-Germain and secured three trophies there before making the move to Chelsea.
His connection with U.S. Soccer goes back to his time at Southampton, where he served as the club’s manager and worked alongside Matt Crocker, the sporting director of U.S. Soccer. Their past collaboration at Southampton is seen as a positive factor in this new appointment.
Former USMNT head coach, Gregg Berhalter, parted ways with the team after a disappointing performance at the 2024 Copa America. This opens up a chance for Pochettino to bring his expertise to the American team.
The USMNT is gearing up for friendlies against Canada and New Zealand this September, making this timing critical for Pochettino to make his mark on the team.
