Pope Francis to Make Landmark Visit to Indonesia in September
The Vatican delegation has arrived in Indonesia to finalize plans for the historic visit of Pope Francis in September, marking his first-ever trip to the country. Thomas Ulun Ismoyo, the spokesperson for Pope Francis’ visiting committee, confirmed the delegation’s presence and their ongoing collaboration with local authorities to organize the visit.
The Indonesian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (KWI) secretary general, Paskalis Bruno Syukur, revealed that the visit from September 3-6 will center around the theme of ‘Faith, Paternity, and Compassion.’ The Pope’s emphasis on fostering positive relationships among all individuals regardless of their background or faith was highlighted by Paskalis Bruno.
Indonesia, with its significant Muslim and Christian populations, including 8.5 million Catholics, is eagerly anticipating the presence of Pope Francis. The visit will make Pope Francis the third Pontiff to visit Indonesia, following the visits of Pope Paul VI in 1970 and Pope John Paul II in 1989, both during the presidency of Soeharto.
Pope Francis’ upcoming journey will also include visits to Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste in August before arriving in Indonesia. Despite concerns about the Pope’s health, given his age and recent health issues, including respiratory problems and joint ailments, Catholics in Indonesia have expressed great enthusiasm and have prayed for his well-being to ensure the successful realization of his travel plans.
