Potential Suspension for Liam Jones Following Dangerous Tackle
A GWS Giants forward was involved in a significant play just 18 seconds into the match against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, where an incident raised concerns regarding player safety.
Giants forward Aaron Cadman obtained a bouncing ball within the 50-meter zone before being tackled by Bulldogs defender Liam Jones. Jones’s maneuver brought Cadman to the ground, resulting in a free kick being awarded to the Giants.
Commentary during the match highlighted the nature of the tackle, with Dwayne Russell stating, “Slammed into the deck by Jones and that is a dangerous tackle that might have repercussions.” Reports suggest that Cadman may have hit his head during the fall; however, he persisted in playing and successfully scored the first goal of the game.
Cadman remained on the field without undergoing a formal concussion assessment, which may influence whether Jones faces any disciplinary action depending on Cadman’s symptoms.
David King, a dual premiership player, commented, “(Cadman) got to his feet, the case against (a ban) — that’s a massive tick.” He added that if the player remains functional, it likely mitigates the risk of suspension for Jones.
Jordan Lewis also noted, “Cadman getting up certainly helps Liam Jones in that instance.” The past two seasons have seen a stringent emphasis on regulating dangerous tackles within the AFL, particularly following incidents earlier this year when certain suspensions were successfully appealed.
Additionally, during the match, Bulldogs midfielder Adam Treloar was observed having his left boot removed while receiving treatment for an injury, returning later with a heavily strapped calf. Shortly after, teammate Laitham Vandermeer was substituted due to reported hamstring tightness, resulting in Arthur Jones entering the game for his first appearance of the season.
Mid-second quarter, Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli encountered a head clash while attempting to execute a tackle. He was briefly assessed off the field but was cleared of concussion and returned to play shortly thereafter.
As a note, any players who may have sustained concussions during Sunday’s game are unlikely to be affected in the opening week of the finals, thanks to a competition-wide bye scheduled between the last round of matches and the commencement of finals in early September.
