Potential Trevor Lawrence Trade Sparks NFL Discussion
A new option has emerged for the New York Jets concerning the quarterback position in 2025. NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic suggested that the Jets could explore a trade for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence during the upcoming offseason. Russini is the second NFL insider to propose this scenario, following Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, who also mentioned it while examining the Jets’ quarterback options for 2025.
Trevor Lawrence signed a record-breaking contract that initially positioned him as the highest-paid player in NFL history, alongside another top passer. However, this status has been surpassed by other NFL stars since. The Jets, who were close to acquiring Lawrence back in 2020, ended that season 0-13, with Lawrence, a Clemson standout, projected as the No. 1 overall draft pick. However, unexpected victories at the end of the season meant the Jets lost the race for Lawrence, ending up with the No. 2 overall pick used on Zach Wilson.
Lawrence’s potential trade discussions arise despite his recent contract extension in June 2024, which set a new precedent. Just six months on, trade rumors have surfaced. The Jaguars, who may be undergoing transitions with potential changes in their managerial staff, are a potential factor in these speculations. It’s not uncommon for new management to prefer selecting their own players, which occasionally prompts such trade talks.
Trevor Lawrence, now 25, is recognized for his talent, evidenced by his NFL stats, including a 63.4% pass completion rate, over 13,774 passing yards, and a 69-to-45 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Despite these numbers, the size and implications of his current contract, a five-year deal worth $275 million, pose questions regarding the feasibility of a trade.
Should Lawrence truly become available, the Jets are encouraged to conduct thorough research before proceeding. NFL analyst Tiki Barber also suggested on his show that Lawrence, who hasn’t found consistency in coaching since entering the NFL, could benefit from a better system, such as that provided by the New York Giants.
Lawrence’s impressive size at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds complements his evident skills, creating a significant point of interest for teams not just in need of a quarterback but in need of a foundational leadership figure for the future. However, his availability, the exact trade compensation, and Jacksonville’s willingness to trade so soon after an extensive contract remain speculative points of discussion among league insiders and fans alike.
