Power Outages Hit Sudbury and Manitoulin Island
A large power outage affected areas of Greater Sudbury and most of Manitoulin Island on Sunday, creating quite a hassle for thousands of residents.
As of 3:30 p.m., Hydro One reported that over 15,737 customers were without power. This disruption followed storms that brought not only high winds but also lightning to the region.
Communities impacted include Walden, Whitefish, Fairbanks, Narin Centre, McKerrow, Espanola, Webbwod, Massy, Spanish, and Cutler, along with the majority of Manitoulin Island.
Power restoration efforts were in progress, with crews working diligently despite adverse weather conditions. Hydro One mentioned that power was restored to many customers in areas like Chelmsford, Dowling, Onaping Falls, Windy Lake, and Cartier by around 2:30 p.m.
Initially, the company hoped to restore power by 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, but that estimate has since been pushed back to around 8 p.m. as crews continue to investigate the cause of the outages.
For safety, Hydro One reminds everyone to stay at least 10 meters away from any downed wires and to report them to 911.
The absence of power means many residents are left without air conditioning, which is particularly uncomfortable given the warm and humid weather currently affecting the region.
Hydro One also offers an online outage map, allowing customers to check the status of their power and get real-time updates on restoration efforts.
