President Bola Tinubu has made a groundbreaking decision by approving a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers. This significant move was announced after a crucial meeting between the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the President has given his approval for the N70,000 minimum wage and has also pledged to review the national minimum wage law every three years. This demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the welfare of workers across the country.

During the meeting with the NLC and TUC leaders, President Tinubu expressed his intention to find ways to support the private sector and sub-nationals in meeting the requirements of the new minimum wage. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the wage increase is effectively implemented and sustained.

The announcement of the wage increase and the assurance of periodic reviews by President Tinubu have been warmly received by labour leaders, who commended the President for his ‘fatherly gesture’ towards Nigerian workers. The President also addressed the issue of unpaid salaries in the university sector, promising to use his executive discretion to resolve the outstanding four months’ salary arrears.
