Presidential Candidate Sowore Proposes N500,000 Minimum Wage for Nigerian Workers
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has put forward a groundbreaking proposal of setting N500,000 as the new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers. Sowore announced this proposition in a message commemorating this year’s May 1 Workers Day on his X platform.
The advocate, renowned for his role in the #RevolutionNow movement, emphasized the urgent need to address the rising cost of living, inflation, and other economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers. Sowore highlighted the impact of fuel hikes, increased energy tariffs, and soaring expenses across various sectors.
In his statement, Sowore expressed his solidarity with both formal and informal sector employees in Nigeria, calling for a significant improvement in their standard of living. He firmly stated, ‘I propose that no Nigerian worker should earn less than N500,000 per month as a minimum wage. The current economic conditions make it essential to provide relief to the hardworking workforce.’
