Prime Minister Modi’s Remarks on Mahatma Gandhi Spark Controversy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent remarks on Mahatma Gandhi have triggered a wave of controversy, drawing criticism from political figures like Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. Modi’s comments, made during a TV interview, suggested that Gandhi’s global recognition was largely due to a film made about him, a statement that has been met with shock and disapproval.
Farooq Abdullah, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, expressed astonishment at the Prime Minister’s assertion, highlighting the significant stature of Gandhi on the world stage even before the release of the said film. He emphasized the universal influence of Gandhi’s principles, which have inspired leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Junior.
In addition to critiquing Modi’s remarks on Gandhi, Farooq Abdullah also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his recent announcement regarding government job restrictions for the families of militants and stone pelters in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah accused the Centre of failing to address the underlying issues of trust and engagement in the region.
Abdullah’s rebuke of Modi and Shah’s policies touched on the deep-seated divisions between communities in India, particularly regarding the treatment of minorities, including Muslims. He pointed out the historical significance of Gandhi’s teachings in promoting tolerance among different religious groups.
Furthermore, Abdullah condemned the silence of the international community on the recent airstrikes in Rafah, calling for stronger measures against Israel and solidarity with Palestine. He reiterated Gandhi’s advocacy for Palestinian rights, contrasting it with Modi’s supportive stance towards Israel in the current conflict.
