Priti Patel to Run for Conservative Party Leadership as Rishi Sunak Steps Down
Former Home Secretary Priti Patel has disclosed her intention to compete to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, following the resignation of Rishi Sunak after the severe defeat by Labour on July 4.
Reports suggest that Patel was encouraged by fellow MPs to run, with an official announcement expected next week. This comes as a surprise move after Shadow Communities Secretary Kemi Badenoch, Shadow Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, and former Home Secretary Suella Braveman also expressed interest in the top position in the Tory party. Shadow Home Secretary James Cleverly and former Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick are reportedly preparing bids as well. No official candidate has declared their intention to run for the Tory leadership yet.
Andrew Mitchell, shadow Foreign Secretary, suggested that Sunak should maintain his leadership role until November amid party divisions on the timeline for the succession process. Mitchell urged against having an interim leader, advocating a slow approach that involves showcasing potential leaders at the party conference starting on September 29.
In line with reports, Patel has assembled a campaign team, financed by Tory donors, which includes Conservative Campaign HQ staff and former advisors. This marks Patel’s debut in a Tory leadership race.
