Priyanka Gandhi’s Candidature from Wayanad Marks a Strategic Move for Congress
The long-standing question of whether Priyanka Gandhi would step into the electoral arena has finally been answered with her poised to contest from Wayanad constituency in Kerala. This decision comes as an extension of the Gandhi family’s strategic positioning in the political landscape.
Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Congress party, won from both Wayanad and Raebareli in the previous Lok Sabha polls. However, he has opted to retain his stronghold in Uttar Pradesh, the family bastion represented by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, for four consecutive terms.
Expressing gratitude and acknowledging the significance of Wayanad for the Congress, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the support and energy he received from the people during the challenging times of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 2019 polls, Rahul Gandhi secured victory from Wayanad even as he faced defeat in Amethi, a traditional family seat, against BJP’s Smriti Irani. His subsequent triumph in the 2024 elections against CPI-M candidate Annie Raja reaffirmed the stronghold of Congress in Wayanad.
