Pro-Khalistani separatist and Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh, currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act, is set to enter the political arena as an Independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. His mother, Balwinder Kaur, confirmed this decision, stating that Singh will be contesting from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency.

Amritpal Singh’s involvement in politics comes as pressure mounts on him to take on the electoral sphere, with Kaur emphasizing that the campaign will be independent of any party affiliations. She highlighted Singh’s deep understanding of Punjab’s issues, signaling that his campaign will focus on addressing these local concerns.

Supporting this move, Singh’s legal counsel, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, revealed that after discussions with Singh in jail, the decision to contest as an independent candidate was made in the interests of the Panthic community. Singh’s intention to participate in the elections is seen as a step towards advancing the interests of Sikhs across the region.

Last year, Amritpal Singh was apprehended by the Punjab Police, along with nine associates, following a tumultuous incident in Ajnala. The confrontation ensued when Singh’s supporters clashed with police, demanding the release of one of his aides. Facing serious charges including attempted murder and obstruction of public services, Amritpal Singh continues to be held under the stringent provisions of the National Security Act.
