A well-known crocodile expert and former academic, Adam Britton, has been sentenced to over ten years in prison for his shocking crimes involving animal abuse. The Northern Territory Supreme Court described his actions as ‘grotesque’ and ‘unspeakable’.

Britton, who used to appear in documentaries alongside famous figures like David Attenborough, pleaded guilty to 60 charges related to bestiality and animal cruelty. He was found to have tortured and killed countless dogs at his property near Darwin.

During the sentencing, Chief Justice Michael Grant highlighted the extreme depravity of Britton’s acts. He had acquired over 42 dogs from Gumtree, promising owners that he would care for them, only to subject them to horrific abuse in a shipping container he referred to as his ‘torture room’.

Evidence showed that Britton filmed himself committing these acts and even shared the videos online, provoking outrage among animal rights groups. Justice Grant stated that Britton’s behavior showed a clear enjoyment of the suffering he inflicted on these animals.

Britton expressed regret in a letter read in court but the judge found no genuine remorse. The new laws in the Northern Territory may have increased penalties for animal cruelty since Britton’s crimes, but they didn’t apply retroactively to his case, leading to criticism from animal advocates.

Outside the courtroom, activists demonstrated with signs labeling Britton a ‘zoosadist’. Emma Hurst from the Animal Justice Party called for stronger laws to deal with such abhorrent acts, emphasizing society’s growing intolerance towards animal cruelty.
