Doctors and medical students across the country are coming together in solidarity after the heartbreaking news of a postgraduate trainee doctor’s sexual assault and murder in Kolkata. This tragic incident has sparked widespread protests, demanding justice and accountability.

In response to the outrage, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the medical college, has submitted his resignation. He expressed his deep sorrow, saying, ‘I am getting defamed on social media… The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign.’ His resignation reflects the heavy toll this case has taken on the entire community.

Only a day earlier on August 11, the medical superintendent of the hospital, Sanjay Vashisth, was also removed from his post amidst the growing tensions. Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the family of the victim, offering condolences and stating that she would support an investigation by central agencies if the family wishes it.

On August 12, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) kicked off a nationwide strike, gathering outside various hospitals, including the Lok Nayak Hospital and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. Protesters chanted slogans, demanding justice for their deceased colleague.

FORDA General Secretary Sarvesh Pandey shared that around 300,000 doctors have joined the protest and that they plan to continue the strike indefinitely until their demands are met. He emphasized, ‘We will continue our strike until we get a written assurance that our demands will be fulfilled.’

Among the demands are a CBI inquiry into the case, the establishment of a fast-track court, and the implementation of Central Protection Act in hospitals nationwide. Dr. Aviral Mathur, president of FORDA India, echoed the call for accountability and stated, ‘We don’t want the patients to suffer. The emergency services are going on for the convenience of patients.’

Protestors also highlighted the need for those in responsible positions at RG Kar to face consequences for their insensitive remarks regarding the incident. Many are equating this tragedy to the infamous Nirbhaya case, underlining the seriousness of the situation.

The Kolkata police are currently reviewing the incident and have summoned three junior doctors and one staff member who were on duty during the time of the assault. The investigations are ongoing as the community seeks justice for their fallen colleague.
