Protest Against Sc/st Reservation Ruling

On August 21, a nationwide protest called Bharat Bandh is set to take place in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding SC/ST reservations. This protest is being organized by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, which is gaining support particularly from SC/ST communities in Rajasthan.

The Supreme Court, in a majority ruling led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, decided that state governments could classify Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes into sub-groups. This would allow states to allocate quotas more effectively, focusing on those who have faced greater discrimination within these communities.

However, the ruling has sparked backlash from various social and political groups who argue that it undermines the core principles of the reservation system. Critics are voicing their concerns and calling for the ruling to be overturned, leading to the Bharat Bandh.

The protest is expected to see widespread participation across the country, though it remains unclear whether businesses will close, as there hasn’t been any official directive from market committees, according to a report from the Times of India.

Emergency services, including medical assistance, will continue to function, but other services such as public transport and private sector operations may be affected. Government offices, banks, schools, and colleges are expected to remain open during the protest.

With the call for Bharat Bandh, many are preparing for potential disruptions, particularly in public transportation. However, essential services like ambulances and medical care will stay operational, ensuring that help remains available during this time of protest.
