As Punjab eagerly awaited the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the initial trends indicated that the Congress had secured a lead with 7 seats out of the 13 in the state. In a close race, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was following closely with 3 seats.

Notably, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) alliance had not gained a single seat according to the early trends, in what came as a surprise to many political observers and analysts.

The electoral battle in Punjab saw a four-cornered fight among the Congress, AAP, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The main competition seemed to be between the Congress and AAP, part of the INDIA bloc nationally, even though both parties contested independently within the state.

The Lok Sabha elections in Punjab had taken place in the seventh and final phase on June 1, with all 13 constituencies going to the polls on that day. With a history of political significance, Punjab had been closely watched as the results unfolded.

The BJP emerged as a key player in certain constituencies like Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Patiala during this election cycle. The party had previously clinched victories in Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

During this election, former Punjab Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also played a significant role as it vied for seats in the state.

Analysis of the exit polls prior to the results indicated that the Congress was likely to secure between 7 to 9 seats in the state. In contrast, the BJP was anticipated to win in around 2 to 4 constituencies. Surprisingly, the ruling AAP was speculated to attain only 0 to 2 seats, which was a significant shift from its previous standing.

Some vital constituencies in Punjab during this election included Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Faridkot, and Patiala, where candidates across party lines contested for a parliamentary seat.

One high-profile contest was from Bathinda, where former Union Minister and Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal faced strong competition from other parties including Congress, AAP, and BJP.
