Merle Thornton Protest Statue

The Queensland government has revealed plans to erect a statue in honor of activist Merle Thornton, who dedicated her life to the struggle for women’s rights. Premier Steven Miles announced this initiative following Dr. Thornton’s passing on August 16, at the age of 93.

Dr. Thornton gained notoriety in 1965 when she and her friend, Rosalie Bogner, famously chained themselves to a bar at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane. This protest was aimed at a law that prohibited women from drinking in public bars and is considered a pivotal event in Australia’s feminist movement. The legislation was repealed five years later, thanks in part to the efforts of Dr. Thornton and her supporters.

In his statement, Premier Miles emphasized Dr. Thornton’s lifelong commitment to advocating for women’s rights, noting her achievements as an author, activist, playwright, and director. He expressed that the statue would serve as a beacon of strength and determination for future generations.

Treasurer Cameron Dick also honored Dr. Thornton’s legacy, stating that the statue would stand as an example for both young women and men who visit the site in the future. Dr. Thornton was recognized as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for her considerable contributions to the advocacy for women’s and Indigenous rights and to the arts.

The University of Queensland, where Dr. Thornton pioneered the first women’s studies course in 1972, celebrated her contributions by awarding her an honorary doctorate in 2020. This recognition followed a gathering at the Regatta Hotel to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the historic protest.

Dr. Thornton was not only a significant historical figure but also a passionate advocate for various social issues, including women’s rights, proper sex education, and access to abortion. Her life was marked by a commitment to challenging societal norms and advocating for equality.

She continued to influence many with her intellect and activism until her final days, demonstrating a profound dedication to the values she championed throughout her life.
