Billy Slater, the Queensland State of Origin coach, has made bold roster changes for the upcoming Game I clash, omitting David Fifita from the 20-man squad and assigning Tom Dearden as the new No.6. Dragons’ Jaydn Su’A will replace Fifita in the back row, while Felise Kaufusi and Brendan Piakura find spots in the extended squad.

Surprisingly, Fifita has been entirely left out, with no bench spot for the Titans’ star, as the Maroons bench consists of Harry Grant, debutant J’maine Hopgood, Mo Fotuaika, and Selwyn Cobbo.

Slater’s decision to drop Fifita was attributed to his performance dip this season in comparison to his high standards set the previous year, as explained in a media briefing on Monday. Despite the tough call, Fifita displayed a true Queenslander spirit, accepting the news graciously.

The Maroons are facing numerous injury setbacks, with key players like Cameron Munster, Tom Gilbert, and Tino Fa’asuamalaeui out, heralding a reconstructed lineup that sees Dearden partnering with Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves.

Concerns over Cobbo’s utility on the bench were addressed by Slater, emphasizing the Broncos star’s versatility across multiple positions, potentially creating a new role for him in the upcoming games.

Positive news comes from Reece Walsh‘s successful return to the field after injury concerns, securing his spot in the squad alongside Piakura, eyeing a future Maroons debut.

The squad, including new faces like Hopgood, Piakura, and Mam, signifies Slater’s strategic blend of youth and experience to face a formidable New South Wales Blues outfit.
