In a recent address to his party members in Ahmedabad, Rahul Gandhi made a significant statement regarding the defeat of the Ram temple movement spearheaded by L.K. Advani. Gandhi claimed that the Congress party and the INDIA bloc had defeated the BJP in Ayodhya, signalling a symbolic victory.

Gandhi’s remark was aimed at boosting the morale of his party, following the defeat of the BJP in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency during the general elections. The defeat saw Awadhesh Pasi, a candidate from the Samajwadi Party, emerging victorious over the BJP candidate Lallu Singh, in an area that encompasses Ayodhya.

The BJP’s loss in this region, considered the heartland of Hindutva politics, has put the party on the defensive and provided ammunition for the opposition to leverage in the Lok Sabha.

Post the electoral defeat, a divisive campaign was launched by the BJP and its supporters against the residents of Ayodhya, labelling them as ungrateful for rejecting the party that promised them the Ram temple and various development projects.

Gandhi attributed the defeat to the anger of the people of Ayodhya, citing grievances related to land disputes and economic hardships caused by the BJP.

Gandhi’s statement should be perceived as a reaffirmation of the ideological stance he envisions for the Congress party. By invoking the name of Advani, Gandhi sought to associate the Ram temple movement with Advani’s leadership rather than Modi’s.

The Ram Janmabhoomi movement, propelled by Advani, holds historical significance in redefining the narrative of Hinduism and solidifying Hindutva ideology within the BJP and RSS.

Gandhi emphasized that the real battle lies against the RSS’s vision of a Hindu Rashtra, cautioning Congress members against aligning with the BJP’s politicization of the Ram temple.

Gandhi’s strategic articulation serves as a clarion call to his party and the electorate to discern the underlying ideological motives driving political agendas in present-day India.

Reflecting on the legacy of leaders like Nehru and the perils of ignoring rising ideological threats, Gandhi’s positioning signals a proactive engagement against the all-encompassing influence of right-wing politics.
