LA Rams Adjust Strategy for Michael Hoecht on Defense
The Los Angeles Rams have made strategic adjustments regarding the deployment of defensive talent Michael Hoecht. Once a defensive tackle, Hoecht transitioned to an outside linebacker (OLB) role, a move made due to a need for increased production at that position. This change was initiated by the Rams coaching staff during the 2022 season. Despite his effective pass-rushing capabilities, Hoecht faced challenges when tasked with pass coverage duties due to his size, leading to unfavorable matchups against speedier wide receivers.
In 2023, Hoecht’s coverage struggles became evident, as he allowed 24 completions and one touchdown. Fans and analysts noted these challenges, attributing them more to defensive scheme issues rather than Hoecht’s individual performance. Subsequently, Hoecht was targeted as a pass rusher more often than other players, including teammate Byron Young, highlighting the mismatch in defensive responsibilities.
Under the oversight of the new Defensive Coordinator Chris Shula, the Rams have refined their approach in 2024. Hoecht’s defensive snap count has been adjusted, reducing the physical demands placed upon him by limiting his activities between 30 and 50 snaps per game. Previously, his workload ranged from 45 to 75 snaps, which often led to diminished performance toward the end of games.
This season, the Rams benefit from the inclusion of rookie OLB Jared Verse and existing talent like Byron Young. This depth allows Hoecht to rotate more strategically, ensuring the team maintains defensive efficacy without overburdening any single player. «The adjustments are not about diminishing Hoecht’s role but optimizing his contributions,» explained a team insider.
Hoecht’s performance improvements can be linked to these strategic changes, according to analysts. Despite the challenges and unlikely prospects for a Pro Bowl selection in the near future, Hoecht remains a reliable veteran presence. His ability to pressure quarterbacks effectively contributes significantly to the Rams’ evolving defensive strategy.
