The Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre, under the Bureau of Meteorology, has detected an unusual and extreme geomagnetic storm event registering at level G5 on the global scale. This significant weather occurrence was forecasted early on Saturday, with the warning highlighting the potential for intense geomagnetic storm conditions throughout the day.

Officials at the Bureau of Meteorology noted that while observed geomagnetic levels within Australia currently stand at a relatively lower G3 – Strong category, the global scale G5 storm indicates a rare and severe event. Such high-intensity geomagnetic storms are uncommon in Australia, with the last recorded G5 event dating back to 2003.

The recent surge in geomagnetic activity can be attributed to a series of four Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) observed between Wednesday, 8 May 2024, and Thursday, 9 May 2024. Although two additional CMEs were detected subsequently, they are not influencing the current extreme geomagnetic conditions.

Geomagnetic storms at G5 level have the potential to disrupt crucial infrastructure and essential services. As a precautionary measure, government agencies and operators of critical infrastructure are advised to implement strategies to mitigate possible impacts on their assets.

Throughout the day, the Bureau of Meteorology will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation and provide updates in the event of any significant changes. The occurrence of bright auroras, a visual manifestation of the geomagnetic storm, is expected to be visible at lower latitudes than usual, with locations like Sydney, Perth, and even parts of Queensland likely to witness the spectacular natural light display.

This rare G5 geomagnetic storm event serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of space weather and the importance of accurate forecasting and timely alerts. The Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre remains the official source for all space weather-related information and warnings in the country, ensuring preparedness and public awareness.
