A particularly active space weather pattern in recent days is set to offer a breathtaking display of the Northern Lights in the Quebec City region this weekend. The best opportunity is expected on Friday night starting at 9 p.m., as solar winds from a powerful eruption are forecasted to reach Earth.
Philippe Moussette, the president of the astronomy club VÉGA in Cap-Rouge, describes the event as an X-class ejection, which represents the strongest category. He believes the chances of witnessing the Northern Lights are very high, given that this eruption was directly aimed at Earth.
Moussette mentions the possibility of observing auroral crowns, which are considered the most beautiful aspect of the Northern Lights phenomenon. It involves the entry of material directly above our heads, resulting in a spectacular view. This is when we witness the Northern Lights filling the entire sky.
The powerful eruption was followed by several smaller ones, which could also generate Northern Lights during the weekend. It is possible that we may witness the Northern Lights for two, three, or even four nights.
For those interested in observing the phenomenon, Moussette suggests moving away from the city, ideally positioning oneself to face north while having the major sources of light pollution behind. Depending on the intensity of the event, it might be possible to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the city center, although the chances are slimmer. A very strong Northern Lights display could potentially be visible even in the heart of the city if it’s a full-sky Aurora.
Moreover, it is currently possible to observe signs of solar activity without specialized equipment. If you still have your eclipse glasses, you might be able to spot the solar spot since it is so prominent, according to the astronomy club president.
It’s essential to bear in mind that solar storms can lead to disruptions in telecommunication networks and the power grid. A particularly significant eruption had plunged Quebec into darkness for several hours back in 1989.
