Recall Issued for Great Value Apple Juice Due to Inorganic Arsenic Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall for Great Value Apple Juice, sold at Walmart stores. This recall affects 9,535 eight-ounce bottles in packs of six, identified by the UPC 0-78742-29655-5.
Issued on August 15, the recall number F-1746-2024 states that the apple juice contains inorganic arsenic levels that exceed the action level set in industry guidance. Following this, the recall was upgraded on August 23 due to the potential health risks associated with the contamination.
The FDA has indicated that long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can lead to severe health consequences, including skin disorders, increased risks of various cancers, and cardiovascular disease. Short-term exposure may cause nausea, vomiting, and other adverse symptoms.
Inorganic arsenic is recognized as a confirmed carcinogen and is considered a global contaminant in drinking water. This type of arsenic is typically more hazardous than organic arsenic, which is found in seafood and is believed to be less harmful.
The recall was initiated by Refresco Beverages US Inc., located in Tampa, Florida. Consumers are advised to check the best if used by date on the product, which is December 28, 2024.
The affected Great Value Apple Juice was sold in several states and regions, with specific details available for consumers wishing to verify their purchase.
