Electric Light Orchestra keyboardist Richard Tandy, a key figure in the band’s iconic sound, has passed away at the age of 76. The news was shared by ELO founder Jeff Lynne, who paid heartfelt tribute to his long-time collaborator and dear friend, Richard Tandy.

Born in Birmingham, Tandy joined Electric Light Orchestra following the release of their debut album in 1972. Initially a bass guitarist, Tandy later transitioned to become the band’s keyboardist, contributing to their distinctive sound on tracks like ‘Mr Blue Sky’ and ‘Last Train to London’.

Richard Tandy’s musical prowess extended to playing various instruments such as the Minimoog synthesiser, Wurlitzer electric piano, clavinet, Mellotron, and piano. His voice also featured prominently on the beloved 1977 hit ‘Mr Blue Sky’, solidifying his role as a core member of Electric Light Orchestra alongside Jeff Lynne and drummer Bev Bevan.

Following ELO’s disbandment in 1986, Tandy reunited with Jeff Lynne in 2014 when the band was reformed as Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Their collaboration continued to resonate with fans, with Tandy being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2017, recognized for his contributions as Lynne’s multi-instrumentalist and valued musical partner.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, based in Ohio, honored Richard Tandy in a post, acknowledging his integral role in Electric Light Orchestra’s fusion of rock and classical music. Tandy’s legacy as a talented musician and pivotal member of ELO remains cherished by fans and the music industry alike.
