In October 2022, Rio Tinto Fer et Titane received funding from the Strategic Innovation Fund of Ottawa to support its decarbonization efforts. With significant investments, the company launched the BlueSmelting, a groundbreaking technology that eliminates the need for coal in the iron and titanium production processes.

The BlueSmelting plant, a revolutionary facility based on fluidized bed technology, is a testament to Rio Tinto Fer et Titane’s commitment to sustainability. This plant, which can process 40,000 tonnes of ilmenite ore annually, marks a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
