Rodrigo Hernandez Ballon D'or

In a historic moment for Manchester City, Rodrigo Hernández, more commonly known as Rodri, has been awarded the prestigious Ballon d'Or 2024. This honor marks the first time a player from Manchester City has received the award. The announcement was met with much celebration at the Etihad Stadium where Rodri was warmly welcomed by his club and supporters.

The official presentation of the trophy took place on the field before City’s match against Tottenham Hotspur. Rodri, currently recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, appeared on the grass without crutches, dressed in a stylish black coat. Accompanied by a light show, he made his way to the field’s center where he was presented with the trophy. A large mural reading «Rodri, Ballon d’Or 2024» adorned the pitch as supporters cheered the occasion.

In his speech, Rodri expressed gratitude and dedicated the award to his teammates, saying, «It’s a privilege, of course, to win this. I’m very happy to be back. I follow you and, for me, you are my family. This is for the club and for you,» Rodri stated. He also humorously addressed Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, teasing him about his contract renewal.

During the previous season, which earned him the Ballon d’Or, Rodri missed only one match with City. He played a crucial role in securing the club’s fourth consecutive Premier League title, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Additionally, he contributed significantly to Spain‘s victory in the Euro 2024.

Rodri’s accolade has made him not only the first City player but also the first player from the Premier League to win the Ballon d’Or since 2008. Despite his current injury, Rodri expressed hopes to return to the field for the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled between June and July.

Meanwhile, City’s fans were completely focused on celebrating Rodri’s achievement, showing little regard for Vinicius Junior, the player who came second in the Ballon d’Or voting.
