Roger Federer made an unexpected decision at Wimbledon, opting to forgo watching Alexander Zverev‘s match on Centre Court in favor of taking a seat on Court 1. The eight-time champion, who previously had Zverev under his TEAM8 management agency, chose to attend the resumption of Ben Shelton‘s intense battle against Denis Shapovalov.

The iconic Swiss tennis star, Federer, has been relishing his new role as a spectator at the All England Club, with his wife and twin boys also spotted in the stands throughout the tournament. Despite Zverev facing off against British hopeful Cameron Norrie on the main show court, Federer decided to join Tim Henman on Court 1 to watch the resumption of the Shelton vs. Shapovalov match, which had been halted due to rain.

Zverev, the No. 4 seed at Wimbledon, was previously represented by Federer’s TEAM8 agency but parted ways with them in 2021, along with his former coach, David Ferrer. Despite their past professional relationship, Federer opted to watch the Shelton vs. Shapovalov clash, alongside other retired players and officials.

While Zverev battled it out on Centre Court, Federer sat on Court 1, the choice paid off as Shelton and Shapovalov delivered an intense five-set match, with the American emerging victorious in an exciting contest. Zverev, on the other hand, managed to secure a straight-sets victory over Norrie despite the absence of his former mentor in the stands. Federer’s presence at Court 1 added to the intrigue of the tournament’s unfolding drama.
