RSPCA Hull and East Riding Hosts Successful Microchipping Event for Cats
At the RSPCA Hull and East Riding center on Clough Road, a significant event took place as the organization hosted a highly successful microchipping event for cats. Fred Owen, the chief executive of RSPCA Hull & East Riding, expressed his delight at the turnout and positive response from both cat and dog owners who participated.
The microchipping event coincided with the new legislation coming into effect mandating all cats to be microchipped, aligning with the previous requirement for dogs but now extended to feline companions. This move aims to enhance the protection and speedy recovery of lost pets within the community.
Microchipping, a straightforward and efficient method, involves inserting a tiny computer chip under a cat’s skin, each containing a unique code registered on a database alongside the owner’s contact information. This process aids in swiftly reuniting lost pets with their owners, ensuring their safe return home.
The requirement for all cats over 20 weeks old, including indoor-only cats, to be microchipped ensures comprehensive coverage under the new law. Owners who missed the initial deadline on 10 June have a 21-day grace period to comply, failing which they could face fines of up to £500.
Fred Owen praised the community’s response and emphasized the critical role microchipping plays in safeguarding pets, underlining the RSPCA’s commitment to assisting individuals in meeting the regulatory standards set forth by the new legislation. The event garnered attention both locally and nationally, with coverage from BBC East Yorkshire.
