Russia‘s Defence Ministry has revealed plans to conduct drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, a move that comes in response to recent remarks from Western officials regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

The Kremlin, in a statement, cited ‘provocative statements and threats’ from Western officials as the impetus behind the drills, marking the first public acknowledgment of such exercises involving tactical nuclear weapons by Russia.

The announcement is perceived as a warning to Ukraine’s allies in the West against further involvement in the protracted war that has strained relations between Moscow and Western powers.

Recent comments by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, suggesting possible military actions in Ukraine, have heightened tensions, with the Kremlin calling the remarks ‘dangerous’.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the situation as a ‘new round of escalation’ triggered by the statements made by Western leaders, pointing to a potential global catastrophe if the situation worsens.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council chaired by President Vladimir Putin, warned that the Western remarks risk pushing the world towards a dangerous precipice.

The debate around tactical nuclear weapons has long been shrouded in secrecy, with the United States estimating Russia’s arsenal at around 2,000 warheads, significantly more than what the US possesses.

These weapons, designed for specific battlefield scenarios, can have yields greater than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and can be delivered via various means, including missiles, torpedoes, and gravity bombs.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen Russia accusing NATO countries of exacerbating tensions through military support, while the West has blamed Russia for engaging in provocative acts and hybrid warfare on NATO soil.

Ukraine, despite facing limitations in troop and ammunition resources, has managed to target Russian territories with long-range firepower, as illustrated by recent drone attacks in the Belgorod region and Sumy.

The situation remains dire, with both sides engaging in strategic military maneuvers and sabre-rattling that further exacerbate the already volatile situation in the region.

With tensions running high and the specter of nuclear conflict looming, the international community is closely monitoring the developments in the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
