Sammy Hagar, known as «The Red Rocker,» recently spoke with Fox News Digital after being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hagar reflected on his time with the legendary rock band Van Halen, describing his joining the group in 1985 as a «defining moment» in his career. This came after replacing original lead singer David Lee Roth, joining band members Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, and Michael Anthony.

During an interview, the 77-year-old musician expressed his desire to mend his estranged relationship with Alex Van Halen, the band’s drummer, before they pass away. «It’s on my bucket list that I will not take this to my grave, and I don’t want Al taking it to his grave,» Hagar stated. He has extended an olive branch multiple times, most recently through Van Halen’s manager Irving Azoff.

Hagar’s initial tenure with Van Halen saw the release of four multi-platinum albums but ended in 1995 following a split with the band. Despite reuniting briefly in 2004 for a touring stint, Hagar’s departure marked the beginning of a long estrangement with Alex, especially after Eddie Van Halen’s passing in 2020.

While Hagar hopes for a personal reconciliation, he clarified, «I want to be friends, though. I don’t want to play in a band with Al. I’m not asking for that.» This statement underscores his intention to rebuild their friendship rather than resume any professional collaboration.

Efforts to reach Alex Van Halen went unanswered, as recounted by Hagar in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock. He and Michael Anthony had attempted to contact Alex several times before their «Best of All Worlds» tour, which features many Van Halen hits and is set to continue in Las Vegas come spring 2025.

In his memoir «Brothers,» Alex Van Halen notably omitted any mention of the «Van Hagar» era, a period when Hagar fronted the band. Hagar expressed his disappointment, stating, «Why he left me out, I would like to hear him explain that someday, because I don’t get it completely.» However, he acknowledged the book’s «soulful and touching» nature, particularly regarding Alex’s relationship with his late brother Eddie.

Beyond their professional history, Hagar empathizes with Alex’s current physical limitations due to a spinal injury suffered in 2022. «That breaks my heart,» Hagar commented, considering the impact such a condition would have on a musician’s career.

Despite the past tensions, Hagar remains hopeful for reconciliation, emphasizing his willingness to keep Van Halen’s music alive for their fans. He also speculated on the possibility of a second volume to Alex’s memoir, hoping it might address more parts of their shared history.
