Samson Nacua’s Remarkable Play Sparks Attention in Preseason Game
New Orleans Saints receiver Samson Nacua made a memorable impact during a preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on August 25, 2024. Nacua, unexpectedly sent onto the field for a return attempt, showcased his athleticism in a thrilling moment following a missed 58-yard field goal attempt by Titans kicker Brayden Narveson.
Nacua, positioned at the back of New Orleans’ end zone, successfully caught the ball and began his run. He maneuvered past defenders before being forced out of bounds at the Tennessee 3-yard line by tight end Thomas Odukoya. The play remained exciting for nearly 20 seconds, although it did not result in a scoring opportunity for the Saints due to the expiration of time.
Expressing his regret after the game, Nacua reflected, “I let the guys down. I should have pitched it to the homeboy that was right there and let him walk it in.” Despite never having played in a regular-season NFL game, he has a background in professional football through leagues such as the USFL and UFL.
After the game, Nacua revealed he had received numerous messages from family and friends, anticipating jokes about his performance compared to his brother, Puka Nacua, who plays for the Rams. “They’re probably going to tell me I am the slower brother,” he said, adding with a smile, “and I’m going to be sick because I know I’m faster than Puka.”
The stamina required for this long return play was evidently taxing for Nacua. He admitted, “Going sideways made it feel like an extra 60 yards because I got to that 50-yard line and I was like, ‘My legs are gone,’” highlighting the physical effort involved in the unexpected return.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen commented on the significance of Nacua’s play, noting that it reflected both smart football and the competitive spirit of the team, even if it ultimately did not impact the score. The evaluation of players continues as the team faces the cut deadline to finalize their roster ahead of the regular season.
Odukoya’s decisive tackle was instrumental in preventing a touchdown, with Titans coach Brian Callahan praising his relentless effort, stating, “that relentless effort to go chase that play down really saved a touchdown and ultimately probably won us the game.”
