San Jose Sharks Acquire Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from Nashville Predators
The San Jose Sharks have made a significant move by acquiring goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from the Nashville Predators in a six-piece trade announced on Friday. This acquisition is seen as a major step in fortifying the team’s goaltending position as they aim for improved performance in the upcoming season.
Yaroslav Askarov, a 22-year-old native of Omsk, Russia, has shown promise in his career thus far. After being drafted 11th overall by the Predators in 2020, Askarov has primarily played for the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, achieving a solid record with a .911 save percentage and a 2.55 goals-against average.
The Sharks have signed Askarov to a two-year contract extension worth $2 million annually, ensuring he will remain with the organization through the 2026-27 season. This move comes as the Sharks look to integrate young talent into their roster after struggling in recent years.
Prior to the trade, Askarov was facing uncertainty regarding his role, especially after the Predators committed to an eight-year contract extension for starting goaltender Juuse Saros. This situation led to reports that Askarov wished to explore opportunities with a different team where he could receive more playing time.
In addition to Askarov, the Sharks’ trade with Nashville included obtaining forward Nolan Burke and a 2025 third-round draft pick. In exchange, the Predators received forward David Edstrom, a 2025 conditional first-round pick, and Magnus Chrona, who was also part of the Sharks’ previous goaltending rotation.
This trade plays a crucial role in the Sharks’ rebuild strategy, which has seen significant changes over the past two seasons. General Manager Mike Grier has focused on integrating young players such as Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith into the team, aiming to return the Sharks to playoff contention.
Alongside Askarov, the Sharks are expected to have a competitive lineup for the upcoming season, with veteran players and promising rookies working together under new head coach Ryan Warsofsky.
