San Marino Celebrates Historic Victory and Promotion in UEFA Nations League
San Marino, widely recognized as the world’s lowest-ranked national football team, marked a historic milestone by achieving their first-ever away victory. The team triumphed over Liechtenstein, advancing to the third tier of the UEFA Nations League. This remarkable feat not only represents their inaugural away win but also the first time San Marino has scored more than once in a competitive match, finishing with a 3-1 scoreline.
The team, ranked 210th in the FIFA world rankings, has historically struggled on the international stage, having lost 199 out of 211 fixtures. Notably, the victory over Liechtenstein was only their third win ever, following previous successes against the same opponent in 2004 and September earlier this year, both at home in San Marino.
Under the management of Roberto Cevoli, who took over last year, San Marino’s fortunes appear to be shifting. Cevoli has managed two wins in ten matches, and the recent victory saw San Marino come from behind to win for the first time in their history. Liechtenstein, ranked 200th, initially took the lead with a goal from Aron Sele, who scored from outside the box.
San Marino quickly responded after the halftime break, with Lorenzo Lazzari leveling the score by capitalizing on a long pass to finish decisively. The team gained the lead when Nicola Nanni converted a penalty with precision. Alessandro Golinucci sealed the victory with a well-executed first-time effort from ten yards out.
Striker Nicola Nanni’s performance elevated him to joint second place among the nation’s top scorers. Meanwhile, both Lazzari and Golinucci joined an exclusive group of San Marino players who have scored multiple goals for their country. As the final whistle sounded in Vaduz, ecstasy erupted on the field as the San Marino bench celebrated with their cheering fans.
Liechtenstein has not secured a competitive win since 2020, ironically against San Marino. Their last win in any competition occurred during a 2-0 victory over San Marino. In contrast, San Marino’s latest accomplishment marks a pivotal moment in their football history, lifting spirits and bringing new hope for the team and its supporters.
