Saudi Pro League Transfer Window Opens with Potential Big Moves
The Saudi Pro League has opened its transfer window, with major opportunities for clubs to attract high-profile players. This move comes in light of the growing trend of big-name footballers joining the league, particularly since Cristiano Ronaldo‘s arrival in late 2022.
The transfer window for the Saudi Pro League commenced on July 17, 2024, and will remain open until October 6, 2024. This extended window provides Saudi clubs the chance to sign players well after the transfer deadlines of other leagues, such as the Premier League.
However, this situation poses challenges for Saudi clubs interested in securing top players, as many European teams are less inclined to sell their star athletes if they are unable to replace them after their own transfer windows are closed.
Among the players currently linked to the Pro League is Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who may consider a move, particularly as Premier League interest appears limited. Al Ahli is reportedly in negotiations for the England international, though Chelsea has recently expressed interest in making a move.
Kieran Trippier, the England right-back, was the subject of transfer speculation earlier in the year. With his position diminished at Newcastle United, renewed interest from the Saudi Pro League could emerge, despite manager Eddie Howe’s desire to retain him.
Joao Cancelo may also find a new home in the Pro League if an agreement cannot be reached between Manchester City and Barcelona, where he has spent the last season on loan. Furthermore, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen could be enticed by the lucrative wages offered by Saudi clubs if his principal aim of moving to Chelsea does not materialize.
In contrast to the record-breaking spending witnessed in 2023, when Saudi Pro League clubs collectively spent over €700 million ($780 million), the financial activity this year has notably decreased. As of August 26, Al Ittihad emerged as the highest-spending team in the current window, with expenditures nearing €97 million ($108 million) for players, including a significant acquisition of Moussa Diaby from Aston Villa.
As the league’s spending total reaches approximately €196 million ($219 million), it falls short in comparison to other leagues. For context, the Premier League alone has invested around €1.98 billion ($2.2 billion) in current transfers, outpacing all spending in the Saudi Pro League combined.
