Saugatuck and Black River Share SAC Division Title in Girls Soccer, Potential District Final Showdown Looms
The girls’ soccer teams of Black River and Saugatuck wrapped up their league campaigns with equal success, securing a shared title in the SAC Division after a season dominated by both sides. This marks the first-ever SAC Division championship for Black River since its transition from the Alliance League, alongside Saugatuck clinching its third consecutive title.
Head-to-head, the showdown between the River Rats and Trailblazers resulted in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, cementing their joint claim to the SAC Division throne and setting the stage for a potential clash in the upcoming district finals, where the two powerhouses could meet once more.
Saugatuck’s Coach, Kyle Lawton, expressed enthusiasm over the momentum gained by his team, emphasizing the pivotal role played by the midfield in controlling games and setting the tone of play. With standout performances and an undefeated streak against divisional rivals, the team’s confidence is soaring as they gear up for the postseason.
Not to be outdone, Black River showcased a formidable offense throughout the season, led by the exceptional goal-scoring prowess of Ella Sligh, an all-state player who contributed significantly to Black River’s success. Lawton commended Sligh’s continuous improvement and impact on the team’s performance.
As the postseason draws near, both teams face crucial matchups to advance in the district playoffs. Black River is set to challenge Fennville, while Saugatuck prepares to square off against Calvin Christian, with the potential for a highly-anticipated rematch in the district championship if both teams continue their winning ways.
If the two formidable teams meet again in the district finals, Lawton stressed the importance of neutralizing Saugatuck’s offensive threat and capitalizing on opportunities early in the match to overcome their sturdy defense, setting the stage for a thrilling potential showdown between the conference co-champions.
