Behind-the-Scenes Drama on ‘NCIS’: Tensions Between Mark Harmon and Creator Don Bellisario
The long-running television series ‘NCIS‘ has been the subject of various behind-the-scenes dramas, with tensions particularly notable between series star Mark Harmon and creator Don Bellisario. Harmon, a central figure of the franchise since its inception, allegedly developed frustrations with Bellisario’s management style, leading to significant creative discord.
According to reports, Bellisario, who also served as the showrunner, had a chaotic approach to management that clashed with Harmon’s expectations. As cited by TV Guide, Harmon became displeased with the producer’s method of sending last-minute script changes, creating a stressful working environment on set.
Executive Producer Charles Floyd Johnson commented on the tense situation, describing the show’s early days as «very complicated.» While Harmon never explicitly demanded Bellisario’s removal, he reportedly suggested that Bellisario could manage the show from a distance to ease tensions.
The conflict led to Bellisario’s departure after the conclusion of the fourth season. Despite retaining the title of executive producer, Bellisario ceased active involvement with ‘NCIS’ following his exit. The show’s success continued unabated post-departure, bolstering the decision to minimize Bellisario’s role.
In response to the fallout, Bellisario later stated in an interview that the decision to leave was his own. «It was just time for me to move on and do something else. I had done enough on the show, so I stepped away. It was my decision,» Bellisario commented.
Mark Harmon has remained a stalwart presence on the show and is set to appear in the upcoming ‘NCIS’ prequel series, ‘NCIS: Origins’. Thus, despite the behind-the-scenes drama, ‘NCIS’ has thrived, largely due to the foundational work laid down by Bellisario and the enduring presence of Harmon.
