Schools Across Puget Sound Face Closures After Severe Storm
A powerful storm, identified as a ‘bomb cyclone,’ has wreaked havoc across the Puget Sound region, leading to extensive school closures due to power outages and fallen trees. The storm played havoc particularly on Tuesday night, impacting many communities including Seattle, Bellevue, Renton, Kent, Mercer Island, and Issaquah.
According to local reports, entire school districts in Bellevue, Renton, Kent, Mercer Island, and Issaquah are closed as of Thursday due to ongoing issues with power supply. Meanwhile, some schools in other districts remain open, having managed to evade the worst of the storm’s impact.
In Seattle, Nathan Hale High School and Wedgwood Elementary School are among those that continue to be affected, remaining closed on Thursday, as reported by district officials.
In Snohomish County, several schools are also closed, including Cascade View Elementary, Central Emerson Elementary, Dutch Hill Elementary, ECEAP, Machias Elementary, Riverview Elementary, Centennial Middle School, Snohomish High School, and Parkway Campus.
The city of Auburn has announced closures for multiple facilities, comprising Rainier, Lake View, Willow Crest, Arthur Jacobsen, and the Virginia Cross Native American Education Center due to similar reasons.
While many are coping with disruptions, Federal Way and Lake Stevens public schools remain operational and on schedule, having avoided significant damage.
Brett Gordon, a Seattle resident, was photographed observing the damage in the Wedgwood neighborhood, where a large branch was reported to have sheared off a tree, further burdening power lines – a common scene across neighborhoods severely affected by the storm.
