Sebastian Coe Eyes IOC Presidency
Sebastian Coe has made it clear that he’s considering a run for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) once Thomas Bach steps down next year. Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013, announced he would be leaving his position, stating, ‘New times are calling for new leaders.’
When asked about his interest in the role, Coe, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, responded positively. He said he would give the opportunity ‘serious thought’ and feels that his extensive experience in the Olympic movement makes him a strong candidate.
Coe highlighted his history with the Olympics, mentioning his role in organizing the London 2012 Games and his tenure as president of World Athletics. He expressed a desire for a variety of candidates during the election process, encouraging others with qualifications to step forward.
The election for the next IOC president will take place in March, and Coe stressed the importance of having a good selection of candidates for the IOC members to choose from. He stated, ‘I think the membership needs to have a good range of qualified people to look at.’
In addition to his presidential aspirations, Coe offered thoughts on the IOC’s policies regarding female athletes, asserting that it is vital to protect the female competition category. He emphasized that the biological aspect should be the deciding factor in these discussions.
Thomas Bach, 70, will complete his presidency after 12 years, and he mentioned that maintaining high standards of governance is essential for the IOC. He plans to remain available to support the Olympic movement until a successor is chosen.
As discussions around gender verification and athlete inclusion continue, Bach defended two female Olympic champions, stating they have the right to compete in women’s events, bringing attention to the complexities surrounding gender classification in sports.
