A security guard, Gavin Plumb, has been convicted of conspiracy involving the abduction, rape, and murder of popular television presenter Holly Willoughby. The elaborate plan to carry out highly sexualized violence against the former This Morning host stemmed from Plumb’s longstanding obsession with the media personality. Following an extensive trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, the 37-year-old from Harlow, Essex, has been found guilty.

Plumb’s sinister intentions were exposed when he unknowingly shared details of his horrifying scheme with an undercover officer from the US. The officer quickly alerted the authorities in Essex, leading to Plumb’s arrest and subsequent charges of soliciting murder and inciting kidnap and rape. This marked the culmination of his disturbing plans that had been developing between 2021 and 2023.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Plumb had meticulously assembled a toolkit intended for perpetrating extreme harm against Holly Willoughby. The prosecutor, Alison Morgan KC, highlighted the gravity of his intentions, stating that Plumb had the genuine intent to carry out the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of the well-known presenter.

Holly Willoughby expressed her gratitude towards the undercover officer who recognized the imminent danger and the swift response from the Metropolitan and Essex police forces. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Ms. Willoughby decided to step away from her role on This Morning after the shocking revelations came to light in October 2023.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood from Essex Police described Plumb as an «obsessive loner» who had meticulously prepared to inflict serious harm on Holly Willoughby. Wood emphasized the critical role of the American officer in preventing what could have led to heinous crimes.

The Crown Prosecution Service, led by specialist prosecutor Nicola Rice, underscored the chilling nature of Plumb’s plan. Despite his attempts to downplay his intentions, the prosecution successfully convinced the jury of the imminent threat posed by Plumb’s actions.

Plumb’s elaborate scheme involved acquiring 400 heavy-duty metal cable ties and purportedly chloroform-filled bottles to incapacitate Ms. Willoughby and her husband during a break-in. He had even scouted an abandoned stud farm with cells for holding his victim.

Following the verdict, Holly Willoughby issued a statement emphasizing the importance of women’s safety and commending the courage of her previous victims for coming forward. She thanked the CPS, the jury, and law enforcement for ensuring justice was served and preventing further harm from the defendant.
