Selena Gomez Launches Mental Health Initiative at Eagle Rock
The first day of school for English teacher Aileen Gendrano Adao at Eagle Rock High School was marked by a significant event. Adao and her junior homeroom students had the unique opportunity to welcome popular singer and actress Selena Gomez.
This visit was part of a special mental health initiative, aiming to raise awareness and support for youth mental health. The event included notable figures such as Senator Alex Padilla, First Partner Jennifer Lynn Siebel Newsom, mental health expert Megan Jones Bell, L.A. Unified Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, and School Board President Jackie Goldberg.
The initiative is backed by a generous funding of $10 million directed towards youth mental health and education non-profits. Among the beneficiaries of this funding is DonorsChoose, which awarded $50,000 to the school. Additionally, Gomez’s Rare Impact Fund contributed another $50,000 to the campus.
Adao stated that the funds will be allocated to ensure every teacher and counselor at Eagle Rock receives at least $300 for mental health-related purposes. Moreover, portions of the funding will be utilized to create a wellness space for teachers and staff, along with outdoor community spaces for all to use.
