Semifinal Showdown: Loyola and Lincoln-Way East Clash in IHSA Football Playoffs
The highly anticipated semifinal clash in the 2024 Class 8A IHSA football playoffs between Loyola Academy and Lincoln-Way East is set to take place on Saturday, November 23, with the kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lincoln-Way East High School.
Loyola Academy, commonly referred to as the «Ramblers,» appears to have regained its form in the latter half of the season. The return to health of quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald, coupled with the solid performance of running back Drew McPherson, who is committed to Iowa, has bolstered the Ramblers’ offensive strategy. Loyola’s defense, highlighted by defensive back Donovan Robinson, a Washington commit, has consistently posed challenges to opponents. In their recent victory over Maine South, Loyola amassed nearly 300 yards in the second half, showcasing their ability to overpower competitors after the break. The Ramblers have historically dominated Lincoln-Way East, securing victories in five of their last six postseason encounters, including consecutive state championships.
On the other side, Lincoln-Way East, known as the «Griffins,» has experienced a stellar season, marked by dominant victories where no competitor came within three touchdowns. The prowess of quarterback Jonas Williams, who demonstrated his rushing capabilities with two long touchdowns in the quarterfinal, alongside a near-impenetrable defense led by defensive ends Caden O’Rourke and Jacob Alexander, has made the Griffins a formidable opponent. Despite the previous losses to Loyola, Lincoln-Way East appears more prepared and determined, poised to challenge for a place in the state finals.
A recent game highlighted Lincoln-Way East’s form as they defeated Stevenson 45-0 in the quarterfinals. Stevenson’s season concluded with a 10-2 record, having achieved significant milestones, including the North Suburban championship. However, the Patriots struggled against the Griffins’ formidable defense and high-powered offense, led by Oregon commit Jonas Williams, who accounted for three rushing touchdowns, illustrating Lincoln-Way East’s relentless pursuit for the title.
