Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Sanjay Singh, raised alarm over the deteriorating health of the imprisoned Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, who has reportedly lost 8.5kg since his incarceration began on March 21. Singh expressed concern over the significant weight loss, noting a marked decline in Kejriwal’s blood sugar levels, indicating potential serious health issues.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Arvind Kejriwal on charges of money laundering in connection to alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Delhi excise policy 2021-22. Despite interim bail granted by the Supreme Court in May for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal was rearrested by the CBI on June 26 at the Rouse Avenue court complex.

Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of orchestrating a conspiracy to keep Kejriwal behind bars and endangering his well-being. Singh emphasized that the continuous incarceration and declining health of Kejriwal demand urgent attention from the judiciary and medical authorities.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the ED case concerning the excise policy matter, taking into consideration his prolonged detention exceeding 90 days and the fundamental right to life and liberty. However, Kejriwal remains in custody in a separate CBI case related to the excise policy affair.

The Delhi BJP dismissed Singh’s statements as repetitive rhetoric, pointing out that Kejriwal’s health claims often coincide with the prospect of bail. BJP spokesperson, Sachdeva, highlighted Kejriwal’s historical pattern of using such situations to intensify political rhetoric rather than seeking medical intervention.
