Serena Williams took a jab at NFL player Harrison Butker during the ESPY sporting awards ceremony, alongside her sister Venus Williams and comedian Quinta Brunson. The trio discussed women’s sports, with Venus emphasizing the importance of treating them like any other sports, except for Butker, whom Serena singled out. The Kansas City Chiefs player’s controversial remarks on various social issues had stirred controversy.

Butker’s comments, made during a speech at Benedictine College in May, included his views on abortion, Pride month, and women in the workforce. He faced backlash for labeling Pride month as a ‘deadly sin’ and suggesting that women’s primary role should be that of a ‘homemaker’. These remarks sparked criticism both within and outside the NFL community.

While Butker was not visibly present at the awards show, he later responded, accusing Serena of creating division through her remarks on women’s sports. The NFL distanced itself from Butker’s views, emphasizing their commitment to inclusion and diversity within the league. Teammates Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes also expressed disagreement with Butker’s statements.

Despite the controversy, Butker’s speech found support among some conservatives in the US, who praised his stance on certain social issues. The NFL kicker’s jersey sales surged following the incident, indicating a mixed reaction to his controversial remarks within different segments of the population.
