Severe Turbulence on London to Singapore Flight Leads to Emergency Landing in Bangkok with Passenger Fatality

Passengers aboard a Singapore Airlines flight, SQ321, traveling from London to Singapore, faced a harrowing ordeal as the aircraft encountered severe turbulence necessitating an emergency landing in Bangkok. The Boeing 777-300ER departed from Heathrow airport and was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members. Unfortunately, the turbulence resulted in one fatality on board.

The flight, which began its journey at 10:38 pm UK time on Monday, was cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet before swiftly descending 6,000 feet in under three minutes, according to flight tracking data. The sudden drop in altitude caused chaos inside the plane, with passengers like Dzafran Azmir, 28, recounting terrifying moments of being thrown into the ceiling.

Upon landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport at 3:45 pm local time, emergency services were on standby to assist the injured. Reports indicate that approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries during the turbulent episode, with local sources suggesting the possibility of additional casualties.

Sky’s Asia correspondent, Cordelia Lynch, who was present at the airport, reported on the unfolding situation and the extent of the injuries. The incident is believed to have been triggered by the aircraft entering an air pocket, causing the emergency diversion.

Singapore Airlines issued a statement expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and affirming their commitment to provide support to all passengers and crew affected. The airline is collaborating with Thai authorities to ensure necessary medical assistance is provided and is dispatching a support team to Bangkok to offer additional aid during this challenging time.
