Severe Weather Alert: Tornado Warning Issued in Abitibi-Témiscamingue Region
Environnement Canada meteorologists are currently monitoring a severe thunderstorm potentially producing a tornado in the regions of Dorval-Lodge, Val-d’Or, and Parent.
According to Environnement Canada, a potential tornado is located approximately 30 kilometers south of Forsythe, moving east at about 50 km/h. Destructive winds, large hail, and intense rainfall could occur in certain areas, prompting the population to seek shelter if a threatening weather phenomenon approaches.
A tornado alert has been issued for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Jamésie regions by Environment Canada for Thursday afternoon and evening, anticipating strong wind gusts up to 100-110 km/h, heavy rainfall up to 50 millimeters, and hailstones of 2 to 4 centimeters diameter.
Environnement Canada advises following weather alerts on their website and MétéoCAN app and secure potential hazards like trampolines or patio kits. In the event of a tornado alert, immediate shelter is crucial to mitigate risks posed by flying debris and strong winds.
The Centre de services scolaire de Rouyn-Noranda has alerted parents to ensure children’s safety during the storm. A local witness, Sébastien Greffard of Rapide-Danseur, reported golf ball-sized hailstones falling, highlighting the severity of the weather event.
As of 4:12 p.m., Environnement Canada communicated the monitoring of a violent storm potentially producing a tornado, emphasizing the dangerous situation with possible injuries. Meteorologist Simon Legault confirmed reports of severe storms in the region, with expectations of very strong winds in northern Abitibi and La Sarre.
Local firefighters in Val-d’Or were on standby, ready to intervene if necessary, according to fire chief Éric Hébert. Precautions and adherence to safety guidelines are advised, with emergency services available for any assistance required.
